The character is notable as its darkness starkly contrasts the rest of the game's bright atmosphere. In an interview with EarthBound Central, Shigesato Itoi, Mother's creator, said that Giygas' creepy dialogue and appearance in EarthBound was influenced by a traumatic moment in his childhood, where he accidentally walked into a theater showcasing the movie The Military Policeman and the Dismembered Beauty, witnessing a scene which he interpreted as murder and rape (shown below).Īside from the main protagonists, Giygas is the most popular character in Earthbound. In both Mother and EarthBound, the player's party is incapable of defeating Giygas by fighting and must sing a lullaby in the former and pray in the latter game. In EarthBound, Giygas is incapable of speaking sanely, saying things such as, "It hurts …" and "Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness," (shown below, right). In Mother, Giygas is displayed as an alien with a human-like figure trapped inside of a shell (shown below, left). All of Giygas's power has been unleashed the event surrounds the four children in a chaotic, bizarre dimension of darkness. Tess and her friends, known in prophecy as the Chosen Four, are forced to abandon their bodies and travel into the future in order to attack Giygas. Giygas's influence is further seen throughout the world, mainly in the form of enemies that Tess encounters. Tess is given the sound stone and instructed to record the Eight Melodies in order to gain the power of Earth and be strong enough to face Giygas. Gus Gus warns Tess of the impending catastrophe. To stop him, one of the only known beings who manage to escape destruction in the future, an alien insect named Gus Gus, travels back to 2017. Now wielding a vast cosmic power which he is unable to control, Giygas becomes a threat to the existence of the universe itself. To rectify this, he seals himself in the devil's machine so that his power would be contained and his mind kept intact. As such, Giygas manifests as what can only be described as pure evil Due to the loss of his mind, Giygas becomes irrational and incapable of thought. In the present day, his influence is spreading over Eagleland, Giygas, already unstable from his guilt surrounding the loss of Maria, exerts such tremendous evil power that it destroys his entire being, including his mind, causing him to become undefinable by human standards. Giygas returns to Earth many years later in 2017 as the primary antagonist of Mother Society, though he vastly differs from his appearance in EarthBound.
